BOSTON, MA -- John Grant, a two-time All-American and a member of the
University of Delaware Athletics Hall of Fame, was recently selected to
play in the upcoming sixth annual Major League Lacrosse All-Star Game in
July.
Grant, a member of the Rochester Rattlers and one of the league’s top
attackmen, will play for the Eastern Conference squad in the annual game
on Sunday, July 8 at Harvard Stadium in Boston, MA at 12:30 p.m. The
all-star announcement was made by MLL Commissioner David Gross. The
All-Stars were selected by the MLL head coaches, general managers, and
players.
Grant, a native of Peterborough, Ontario, was an All-American at
Delaware in 1998 and 1999 and was inducted into the UD Athletics Hall of
Fame in 2005. In 1999, he led the Blue Hens to the NCAA quarterfinals
under head coach Bob Shillinglaw, recording 110 points (56g, 54a). The
point and assist totals set school records and were also tops in the
nation. He was named the USILA National Collegiate Player of the Year
following his senior season.
Grant has played in the All-Star Game on two other occasions. In his
previous two appearances, he put up nine points (6g, 3a). There will
also be a skills competition at halftime consisting of accuracy, fastest
shot, and freestyle. Grant will be participating in the accuracy contest.
Grant leads the MLL in points (31) and goals (22) this season. He had a
big performance on June 16 against the Denver Outlaws when he tied a
league record for points with 14, and tied a Rochester franchise record
for goals (8). He led the short-handed Rattlers to a 27-26 victory in
the highest scoring game in league history. Grant is one of the
league’s all-time leading scorer, having scored 112 goals in 42 career
games.
For the first time in the MLL's seven-year history, the game will match
up all stars from the Eastern Conference against their Western
Conference counterparts. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN2 with
Joe Beninati and Quint Kessenich calling the action.
