LOS ANGELES -- University of Delaware midfielder Dan Deckelbaum, a
two-time All-Colonial Athletic Association performer who led the Blue
Hen men’s lacrosse team to a berth in the NCAA Final Four this past
spring, has been honored as a member of the Jewish Sports Review 2007
Men’s College Lacrosse All-America Team.
Deckelbaum, who earned his degree in fitness management from the
University of Delaware in May and is currently playing professionally
with the Major League Lacrosse Chicago Machine, was one of 11 players
selected to the team.
The team is selected by editors of the Jewish Sports Review, a long-time
bi-monthly publication that promotes Jewish athletes and also selects
Jewish All-America teams in most college and high school sports. To be
eligible, student-athletes must have at least one Jewish parent, do not
practice another faith, and identify ethnically as a Jew.
Deckelbaum, a midfielder from Owings Mills, MD (Owings Mills High
School), was a four-year standout and three-year starter for the Blue
Hens. He was the team’s third leading scorer this past spring with 35
points on 27 goals and eight assists and earned first team All-CAA
honors for the second straight year. He ended his career by registering
97 career points on 77 goals and 20 assists and posted nine career hat
tricks. He was selected in the third round of the Major League Lacrosse
draft by Chicago back in June.
Delaware posted a 13-6 overall record, captured the Colonial Athletic
Association Tournament title, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for
just the fourth time in school history for head coach Bob Shillinglaw
this spring. The 15th-ranked Blue Hens advanced to the NCAA Final Four
for the first time in school history as they defeated defending national
champion Virginia 14-8 in the first round and UMBC 10-6 in the
quarterfinals. Delaware’s improbable run came to an end with an 8-3 loss
to No. 3 seed Johns Hopkins in the NCAA semifinals March 26.
