NEPTUNE BEACH, FL -- The University of Delaware men’s lacrosse team,
fresh off a Colonial Athletic Association title and appearance in the
NCAA semifinals in 2007, will take part in the inaugural 2008 Face Off
For a Cause game this Feb. 16 against UMBC.
Delaware, which will open its season the week before with a Feb. 9 game
at Saint Joseph’s, will meet up with UMBC again after defeating the
Retrievers in last year’s NCAA quarterfinals at Navy.
The Face Off For a Cause game will be played at Fletcher High School in
Neptune Beach, FL at 12 noon and the proceeds will benefit the Wounded
Warrior Project. Following the Delaware vs. UMBC men’s game, Pfeiffer
University will take on Rollins in a women’s lacrosse game. Tickets are $15.
The mission of Wounded Warrior Project is to raise the awareness and
enlist the public's aid for the needs of severely injured service men
and women, to help severely injured service members aid and assist each
other, and to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet their
needs. Wounded Warrior Project is a non-profit organization.
“We are very excited about bringing world-class lacrosse competition to
the Jacksonville area, especially for such an outstanding cause,” said
event organizer Vickie Dean. “We invite the entire community to come out
and watch four of the top level NCAA lacrosse teams in the country while
at the same time support the brave men and women of our Armed Forces who
sacrifice so much on behalf of all Americans.”

The Blue Hens, led by 30th year head coach Bob Shillinglaw, return five
starters from last year’s team that went 13-6, captured the CAA
Tournament title, and defeated defending national champion Virginia and
UMBC in the NCAA Tournament before falling to national champion Johns
Hopkins in the semifinals at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, MD.
In addition to the return of standout senior goalkeeper Tommy Scherr,
defenders Patrick Biehl and Evan Crowther-Washburn, and scoring
standouts Curtis Dickson (21 goals), Vincent Giordano (16 goals), and
Kevin Kaminski (16 goals), the Hens will also welcome back senior and
three-time All-CAA attackman Cam Howard, who missed all but two games
last season with a knee injury. He has scored 62 career goals and is
expected to be among the nation’s top offensive players this spring.
Delaware must replace its top three scorers, All-Americans Jordan Hall
and Dan Deckelbaum and All-CAA selection Adam Zuder-Havens, as well as
all-time NCAA faceoff leader, three-time All-American, and 2007 Major
League Lacrosse Rookie of the Year Alex Smith.
