Brett Manney Selected in Major League Lacrosse Draft by Washington Bayhawks |

HOBOKEN, NJ -- University of Delaware senior midfielder Brett Manney,
who was rated as one of the top defensive midfielders in the nation this
past season, was selected with the 31st overall pick by the Washington
Bayhawks in the Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft held Wednesday.
A 6-3, 215 lb. native of Newtown, PA (Holy Ghost Prep High School),
Manney was the first selection in the fourth round and the Bayhawks’
second pick overall. With the current season underway, Washington owns a
record of 1-1 heading into a June 1 game at Chicago.
Manney was a four-year standout for the Blue Hens as a defensive
midfielder, appearing in 50 games with four starts and contributing five
goals and five assists. Defensively, he collected 87 groundballs and
caused 25 turnovers during his career. This past season he played in 14
games and had two goals and one assist to go with 31 groundballs and
eight caused turnovers.
He played a key role in leading Delaware to the Colonial Athletic
Association title and a berth in the NCAA national semifinals in 2007.
Earlier this month he received the UD Student Service for Athletes
Outstanding Contributor Award for his community service efforts. He is
an English major with a minor in journalism at Delaware.
Manney joins nine other former Blue Hen standouts in the league this
summer - Chris Collins (Goalkeeper, Washington), Matt Alrich (Attack,
Boston Cannons), Rob Smith (Defense, Chicago Machine), Dan Deckelbaum
(Midfield, Chicago), Jordan Hall (Midfield, Rochester Rattlers), Jason
Motta (Midfield, Philadelphia Barrage), Bryan Tingle (Midfield,
Philadelphia), Alex Smith (Faceoff Specialist, Rochester), and John
Grant (Attack, Rochester). Grant currently ranks second in the league in
scoring with 13 points while Alrich is tied for third with 10 points.
The second of five Colonial Athletic Association players selected in the
draft, Manney was joined by Hofstra’s Kevin Unterstein, who was picked
by New Jersey with the 20th overall pick. Manney was 31st overall by
Washington, Hofstra’s Mike Unterstein was picked No. 35 by Long Island,
Towson’s Jonathan Engelke was tabbed No. 40 by Long Island, and Sacred
Heart’s Tony Tanzi was the No. 46 pick by Boston.
Boston selected Johns Hopkins midfielder Paul Rabil with the first pick
in the draft, New Jersey followed by drafting Duke attackman Matt
Danowski and Syracuse attackman Mike Leveille, Chicago selected Johns
Hopkins midfielder Stephen Peyser No. 4, and Los Angeles grabbed Ohio
State attackman Kevin Buchanan with the No. 5 pick. A total of 50
players were selected.
In addition to Manney, Washington also selected Johns Hopkins defenseman
Matt Bocklet in the second round (15th overall), Notre Dame defenseman
Sean Dougherty in the fourth round (34th), Loyola midfielder Paul
Richards in the fourth round (37th), and Michigan faceoff specialist
Brekan Kohlitz in the fifth and final round (44th).
