Canisius Men’s Lacrosse Tops MAAC Preseason Poll

The Canisius College men’s lacrosse team was picked to repeat as MAAC Champions in the 2009 preseason coaches poll. In addition, sophomore midfielder Adam Jones (Owen Sound, Ontario) was selected as the Preseason Player of the Year. Joining Jones on the All-MAAC Preseason Team is classmate Nick LoCoco (Cicero, N.Y.).

The Griffs received 80 of a possible 81 points in the preseason poll. Providence (68 points), Siena (61) and VMI (47) rounded out the top four.

Jones became the first Griff to earn All-America honors in 2008. He led the team with 47 points and 38 goals to go along with nine assists. One of just three freshmen in the country to earn All-America honors in 2008, Jones led all midfielders nationally with his 38 goals. He finished his rookie season first in the MAAC with 2.38 goals per game and placed second with 2.94 points per game. Jones also earned preseason All-America accolades by Inside Lacrosse.

The 2008 MAAC Rookie of the Year, LoCoco posted 46 points on 12 goals and a team-leading 36 assists in 2008. The freshman ranked third nationally and led the MAAC with 2.12 assists per game. He also placed third in the conference with 2.88 points per contest.

The Griffs are coming off their most successful season in school history in 2008. Canisius won a school-record 10 games, earned the MAAC regular-season title for the second time in three years and won its first MAAC Tournament to advance to its first NCAA Tournament. The Griffs return six starters and 22 letterwinners from the 2008 championship squad.

Canisius opens its season on Friday, squaring off at No. 16 Colgate. Game time is slated for 4 p.m.
