BALTIMORE, Md.- Inside Lacrosse has released its list of Face-Off Yearbook Preseason All-Americans for the 2009 Division I season and the Cornell men?s lacrosse team leads the way with four players on the list, the most by any school. Max Seibald, John Glynn and Matt Moyer earned first-team selections, while Ryan Hurley was selected to the third team.
Seibald, a three-time All-American from Hewlett, N.Y., is also a three-time first-team All-Ivy selection, becoming only the eighth player in Cornell history to earn that distinction. He was named to the 2008 Lt. Raymond J. Enners Award, Division I Player of the Year Watch List after finishing the year ranked second on the team with 27 goals and third overall with 33 points. A two-way player with tremendous speed and strength, he registered his 100th career point last season. He holds the longest point scoring streak on the team, and enters the 2009 season tied with Zack Greer for the longest point scoring streak in the country, having registered at least one point in the past 34 games. Seibald became the first Big Red men?s lacrosse player to be named a finalist for the Tewaaraton Trophy, doing so as a sophomore in 2007, making him one of only five sophomores in the history of the award to be named a finalist.
Glynn, a two-time second-team All-America selection, is also a two-time first-team All-Ivy selection and finished the 2008 season ranked second on the team with 44 points off 18 goals and a team-best 26 assists. Glynn took over the majority of the face-off duties last year for the Big Red and proved to be one of the best in the nation, ranking third in the country with a .679 win percentage. Glynn also ranked ninth in the nation with 5.47 ground balls per game and 17th overall with 1.67 assists per game.
Moyer has been named an honorable mention All-American in each of the last two seasons. The senior defender was named to the All-Ivy first-team last year after being named second-team following his sophomore season. Moyer is the cornerstone of a Big Red defense that ranked 20th in the country last year in scoring defense, allowing only 8.53 goals per game. Moyer started every game during the 2008 season and picked up 35 ground balls on the year.
Hurley earned an honorable mention All-American selection last year after a breakout sophomore season in which he became just the 11th individual in Cornell history to score more than 40 goals in a single season. Likewise, his 60 total points on the season were the most by a Cornell sophomore since Eamon McEneaney tallied 96 points in 1975. A unanimous first-time All-Ivy selection in just his first year as a starter, Hurley proved to be an offensive power, ranking fourth in the nation with 3.07 goals per game and sixth overall with 4.00 points per game. Hurley led the team with 46 goals and added 14 assists for a team-best 60 points.
The Big Red opens the 2009 season on Saturday, Feb. 21, as it travels to Binghamton to take on the Bearcats at 1 p.m.
