Four Pioneers Named to All West/Midwest Regional Team
Kristie Leggio and Karen Morton selected to first team; Ali Flury and Kelly O’Connell make second team

DENVER – Kelly O’Connell (Baltimore, Md.) and Karen Morton (Adelaide, Australia) were named to the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association All-Regional first team for the West/Midwest, while Ali Flury (Arnold, Md.) and Steph Coyne (Baltimore, Md.) were selected to the second team, the IWLCA announced today.

“I am happy to see the hard work of these four players rewarded,” DU head coach Liza Kelly said. “They are all great players, and we are proud to have them at the University of Denver.”

The IWLCA honored 128 student-athletes in Division I with inclusion on one of eight All-Regional teams, with each of the four regions, the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, South, and West/Midwest, naming a first and a second team.

All 128 athletes are now eligible for inclusion on the IWLCA/US Lacrosse All-American teams, which will be announced on May 29. The IWLCA and US Lacrosse will honor the National All-Americans at an awards banquet on June 14, 2008 in Downingtown, Pa.

O’Connell, a senior defender who was selected to the second team in 2006 and 2007, was the 2008 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Year. O’Connell was sixth in the nation with 2.05 caused turnovers per game, helping the Pioneers to the best mark in the NCAA with 13.53 caused turnovers per game. On April 20, O’Connell set a new DU single-game record by causing eight turnovers against then-No. 19 Stanford, a performance that helped her earn MPSF Co-Player of the Week, the first time in at least four years that a defender has won the award. Additionally, O’Connell ended the year with 36 draw controls and 29 groundballs. An anchor of Denver’s defense for four years, O’Connell was a four-time All-MPSF member and a two-time All-MPSF Tournament selection. O’Connell ended her career with 93 caused turnovers, the best mark ever for a Pioneer.

Morton, who earned first team honors for the second-straight year, is third all-time for DU in career goals (139) and points (191), and she is fourth all-time in career assists (52). Morton has scored at least one point in all 58 games she has played with the Pioneers, the longest such current streak in the nation heading into next season. Morton has also scored a goal in 32-straight games, the third longest streak in the country going into 2009. Morton ranked third in the MPSF in goals per game (2.42) and draw controls per game (2.16), and fourth in points per game (3.21). Morton has been named to the All-MPSF and All-MPSF Tournament teams in each of her first three seasons.

Flury earned second team honors for the second-straight season after being named All-MPSF for the second-consecutive year. Flury finished the regular season ranked second in the conference with 2.63 goals per game and 0.68 free-position goals per game, and eighth with 2.89 points per game. The midfielder’s 50 goals led DU this season, and Flury has recorded at least one point in all 38 games since joining the Pioneers, the sixth longest such streak in the nation heading into next season and the longest of any sophomores.

Coyne was named to the All-Regional second team for the first time after shattering Denver’s single-season record with 53 assists and becoming DU’s career leader with 102 assists, surpassing Kristie Leggio in both categories. Coyne was fourth in the NCAA with 2.79 assists per game and 10th with 86 points, while leading the MPSF in both categories. The three-time MPSF Player of the Week is fourth in DU history with 187 career points, just four behind Morton who is in third place. Coyne had five or more point during nine games this season, including 10 points off three goals and seven assists against Colgate on March 16. The seven assists that day tied DU’s single-game record, while the 10 points tied for second all-time. Coyne was also named to the All-MPSF team for the second-straight season.
