Pioneers Place 10 on Academic All-MPSF Team

DENVER – Katie Gold (Centennial, Colo.), Tammy Corcoran (Garden City, N.J.), Jenn Moore (Highlands Ranch, Colo.), Steph Coyne (Baltimore, Md.), Megan Tyrie (Littleton, Colo.), Danielle Provance (Baltimore, Md.), Ali Flury (Arnold, Md.), Dani Espinosa (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Lexi Sanders (Greenwood Village, Colo.) and Kelly O’Connell (Baltimore, Md.) were named 2008 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Women’s Lacrosse Academic All-Conference selections, MPSF executive director Al Beaird announced today.
The MPSF honors student-athletes who have a 3.0 or better cumulative grade point average, are at least a sophomore, have spent at least one full academic year at their university and competed in at least 50 percent of the team’s competitions.
Coyne, Moore, Provance and Tyrie were Academic All-MPSF honorees last season, while O’Connell joined Provance and Tyrie on the all-academic team in 2006.
Gold, a sophomore business major with a 3.94 GPA, played goalkeeper in 14 games for the Pioneers. She tallied 48 saves and had a 42.5 saves percentage while averaging 9.30 goals against per game.
Corcoran played in 10 games with two starts this season. She scooped up two groundballs and had one draw control and one caused turnover. The senior defender has a 3.47 GPA in sociology.
Moore, a junior defender, played in all 19 games with 18 starts. She recorded one assist, 21 groundballs, 10 draw controls and 29 caused turnovers on the season. The management major has a 3.39 GPA.
Coyne, a 2008 All-MPSF selection, was Denver’s leading scorer in 2008 with 33 goals and 53 assists, a DU single-season record, for 86 points. The junior attacker started all 19 games this season and has a 3.32 GPA in communications.
Tyrie earns her third Academic All-MPSF honor and is an international marketing major with a 3.28 GPA. The senior attacker saw action in all 19 games with seven starts. She tallied four goals and three assists for seven points on the season.
Provance, a senior defender, has also been named Academic All-MPSF for the third consecutive season. The marketing major has a 3.26 GPA. She appeared in all 19 games and started 18 this season while tallying two assists, 26 groundballs, seven draw controls and 12 caused turnovers.
Flury played in all 19 games and made 18 starts this season. The sophomore midfielder scored 50 goals and added five assists for 55 points and was also honored as an All-MPSF selection this season. She has a 3.22 GPA in business.
Espinosa is a junior attacker with a 3.18 GPA in Spanish. She scored five goals in 12 games this season.
Sanders, a sophomore midfielder, started in 18 of her 19 appearances this season. She netted 39 goals and had seven assists for 46 points, while also tallying 15 groundballs, 18 draw controls and 13 caused turnovers. Sanders is a communications major with a 3.12 GPA.
O’Connell, the MPSF Player of the Year, started all 19 games at defense for the Pioneers this season. She had two assists, 29 groundballs, 36 draw controls and 39 caused turnovers. The senior marketing major has a 3.02 GPA.
Denver’s women's lacrosse team finished the 2008 season with a 13-6 overall record and won its third-straight MPSF regular season championship.
