DURHAM, N.C
- The Duke attack unit was tabbed tops in the country by Inside Lacrosse on Thursday, while the Blue Devil midfield unit is ranked fifth in the nation, as the magazine continues its preseason coverage.
Seniors Matt Danowski and Zack Greer were ranked No. 1 and No. 5, respectively, on IL’s top 20 list of attackmen for 2008, while senior Brad Ross and junior Ned Crotty appeared on the top 20 midfielders list at No. 9 and No. 15, respectively.
A year ago, Danowski registered an ACC single-season record 96 total points on 44 goals and 52 assists. His point total, which led the nation, broke the 44-year old league single-season mark of 93.
In becoming just the fourth player in NCAA history to produce a season with 40 or more goals and 50 or more assists, Danowski paired with Greer to form the second-most prolific scoring tandem in NCAA history with a combined 190 points, falling just three points shy of the record of 193 set by Mike French and Eamon McEneaney of Cornell in 1975.
Greer amassed 67 goals and 27 assists for 94 points in 2007, as his 67 tallies led the nation and rank as the third-highest single-season total in NCAA history.
Crotty is coming off a sophomore season in which he tallied 25 goals and eight assists for 33 points, while Ross netted 22 goals and dished out eight assists for 30 points as a junior a year ago.
Duke will open the 2008 campaign on this Saturday, Feb. 16 as the Blue Devils host Bucknell. Face-off is set for 1 p.m. at Koskinen Stadium.
