Imbesi Sweeps National Player of the Week Awards

DURHAM, N.C. --- Junior goalkeeper Kim Imbesi was named the Player of the Week by all three lacrosse media sources who give out that award: Inside Lacrosse, Womenslax.com and Womenslacrosse.com. Imbesi made 13 saves in leading Duke to a 9-7 win over No. 3 Maryland in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament.

Imbesi 13 stops included six in a span of 4:20 late in the game when Duke was trying to hold on to a three-goal lead. Maryland was held to just one goal in the final 17 minutes, which didn’t come until there was less than one minute remaining in the contest. Tewaaraton Trophy finalists Dana Dobbie and Kelly Kasper put 10 shots on goal for the Terrapins, but Imbesi stonewalled eight of those. In Duke’s last five games, she has made 45 saves for a .517 save percentage and an 8.09 goals against average. Imbesi has been the top goaltender in the NCAA Tournament, leading in save percentage (.595), saves per game (11.0) and ranking second in goals against average (7.50). Just last week, she was named to the Womenslacrosse.com Weekly Honor Roll for her nine-save performance, which included four stops in the last 1:32, against Georgetown in the NCAA Tournament first round. The product of Bridgewater, N.J., holds a .422 save percentage and a 10.19 goals against average for the season and has played all but 28 minutes in the net for Duke.

Duke will play No. 2 seed Penn on Friday at 8:30 p.m., in the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament at Johnny Unitas Stadium in Towson, Md. The game will be broadcast on CBS College Sports Network. If the Blue Devils should defeat the Quakers, it will play the winner of the No. 1 Northwestern-No. 5 Syracuse match in the national championship game on May 25 at 7:00 p.m., also at Johnny Unitas Stadium.
