DURHAM, N.C. --- The Duke women’s lacrosse team added on to its postseason hardware this week in earning awards from the IWLCA/U.S. Lacrosse, Inside Lacrosse and Womenslacrosse.com. Midfielder Emma Hamm highlighted the honors for Duke by being named the Rookie of the Year by the latter two sources. Junior attacker Carolyn Davis, senior defender Aiyana Newton, junior attacker Megan Del Monte, freshman midfielder Sarah Bullard and Hamm all were placed on at least one All-America or All-Rookie team by one of those three media outlets.
Hamm was named Womenslax.com’s Rookie of the Year earlier this week, allowing her to sweep all three Rookie of the Year awards that are passed out each season. She also earned third team All-America accolades from the IWLCA/U.S. Lacrosse and from Womenslacrosse.com. Hamm made the adjustment to Division I lacrosse very smoothly this year. A product of Wayne, Pa., she tallied at least one point in every game until she went down with an ankle injury less than two minutes into Duke’s national semifinal contest with Penn. Hamm led the team in draw controls (51) and caused turnovers (28) this season and ranked second in assists (21) and ground balls (38). She earned a spot on the All-ACC team in just her first season as a Blue Devil and then topped that off by winning the ACC’s Rookie of the Year Award. On March 3, she was named WomensLax.com’s National Rookie of the Week and on March 18 honored as WomensLacrosse.com’s National Rookie of the Week. Hamm was named to the IWLCA All-South Region second team last week.
Davis earned first team All-America honors from the IWLCA/U.S. Lacrosse and from Inside Lacrosse and was named a second team All-America by Womenslacrosse.com. Earlier this week she was named an All-America by Womenslax.com and a member of the NCAA All-Tournament team, and last week was earned IWLCA All-South Region first team accolades. Davis was outstanding for the Blue Devils this season, especially considering she was cleared to play just a week before the season opener after spending the off-season rehabilitating from a torn ACL that she suffered in the final game of the 2007 campaign. Davis also adjusted to playing attack after running the midfield the previous two seasons. The native of Skaneateles, N.Y., led Duke with 61 goals, 76 points and 129 shots. Davis also picked up 26 ground balls, grabbed 24 draw controls and caused 13 turnovers. In April, she was named to the All-ACC team for the second straight year and to the ACC All-Tournament team for the second time in three years. Davis finished fourth on the Duke records list for goals in a season and seventh for season points. She currently ranks ninth in Division I for active career goal leaders (not including the NCAA class of 2008).
Newton, a native of Baltimore, Md., earned third team All-America honors from the IWLCA/U.S. Lacrosse and first team accolades from Inside Lacrosse and Womenslacrosse.com. As the leader of Duke’s experienced defense, she had 16 ground balls and 16 caused turnovers this year and was often the defender called upon to mark the opposing team’s most serious offensive threat. That included shutting out UNC’s Megan Bosica in the second half and keeping Virginia’s Ashley McCulloch without a goal while she was matched with her in two games. She held Georgetown’s Jordy Kirr without a goal in the first round of the NCAA’s and limited Maryland’s Kelly Kasper, a Tewaaraton Trophy finalist, to just one score in the quarterfinals on May 17. Newton, a three-year starter, led the senior class with 79 games played and 62 starts in her career. Newton became one of four Blue Devils to earn All-ACC status last month and was an IWLCA All-South Region first team selection last week.
Del Monte was named a third team All-America by both the IWLCA/U.S. Lacrosse and Inside Lacrosse after putting up some great numbers this season on offense. The native of Lutherville, Md., led the team with 25 assists in her first season as a starter. She ranked second on the Duke squad in goals with 41 and points with 66 and also ranked in the top nine in the ACC in goals, assists and points per game. She finished sixth on the Duke season assists record list and is currently eighth on the career assists list. Del Monte was honored by being placed on the All-ACC team and the IWLCA All-South Region first team for 2008.
Bullard rounded out the award-winning by joining Hamm on Womenslacrosse.com’s All-Rookie team. Bullard tallied 26 goals, 32 ground balls, 24 draw controls and 11 caused turnovers for the Blue Devils this season. She picked up the first award of her young career when she was named to the ACC All-Tournament team in April. Bullard found the back of the net twice in Duke’s first round tournament win (19-6) over Virginia Tech and led the Blue Devils with three scores in their one-goal loss to Virginia (10-9) in the semifinals. She scored those five goals on just seven shots.
Duke went 13-8 in 2008, placed third in the ACC at 3-2 and reached the national semifinals of the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight season despite losing seven of 12 starters from 2007 to graduation and injury. The Blue Devils will return nine of 12 starters from this year’s squad in 2009 and will have 2007 Tewaaraton Trophy finalist Caroline Cryer back after missing the season due to a foot injury.
