RICHMOND, Va. – Junior defender Maggie Bridges was
honored by the Colonial Athletic Association today as its
Scholar-Athlete award winner for women’s lacrosse. Bridges is one of 10
student-athletes, a total of one in each sport, selected by the
conference as recipients of the award for the spring sports season. All
10 winners had grade point averages above 3.45, including five who had
marks of 3.7 or better. Nine of the student-athletes also earned
all-conference honors for their athletic performances this season.
The conference honors one Scholar-Athlete in each of its 22 championship
sports. Nominees for the award must be a starter or important reserve on
their team and must meet the Academic All-America minimum cumulative
grade point average of 3.20. The winners were selected by a vote of the
sports information directors at each CAA institution.
Bridges, who is majoring in biology at George Mason, is a three-time CAA
Commissioner’s Academic Award recipient. She also is a Dean’s List
student and has been honored as a George Mason Scholar-Athlete. A
two-time First-Team All-CAA selection, Bridges earned CAA Defensive
Player of the Year honors in 2008 after causing a career-high 22
turnovers and ranking second on the team in ground balls. Bridges was a
key figure for a Patriots’ defense that ranked sixth in the nation in
caused turnovers and seventh in ground balls.
