Freshman Attacker Dean Gibbons Excited to Start Season at Harvard
Cambridge, Mass. – With Harvard men’s lacrosse kicking off its season next month, freshman Dean Gibbons is looking forward to his first year on the Crimson and is excited about the future of the program.
The Garden City, N.Y. native earned mention as the second best recruit coming into an Ivy League school and is one of nine members of a highly-regarded freshman class for first-year head coach John Tillman.
Gibbons, a Top 15 Incoming Freshman by Inside Lacrosse Magazine, says attending Harvard was always a dream of his, and he’s proud to be a member of the team.
“When I was looking at colleges, I wanted to find the best fit academically and athletically, and this is definitely the place,” Gibbons said. “I wanted to attend a school that played the highest level of athletics and also would prepare me for the future. Harvard has the potential to be one of the best lacrosse programs in the country and we’re pumped to be playing for coach Tillman.”
Gibbons is planning on concentrating in economics, and believes that being a member of the lacrosse team has helped teach him valuable time management skills, especially as the season approaches.
“I was able to adjust to the academic demands, but now I need to prepare for finals and then get in gear for the season.”
Gibbons, a 2007 Under Armour All-America selection, collected three All-America citations in his career. The 2007 Nassau County Player of the Year set the single-season scoring record in his junior season with 135 points and added 116 as a senior. In his last year at Garden City (N.Y.) High School, Gibbons scored 64 goals, after scoring a Long Island record 101 as a junior. He graduated with 236 goals, tying current Harvard attackmen Mac Motschwiller for the Long Island career record.
“We have a great schedule this season with some tough competition against some of the best teams in the country,” Gibbons continued. “Fall practice went really well. Working hard and having a difficult schedule will only make us better.
“Right now, we’ve been working out as a team, and have been attending captain practices. I can’t wait to step on the field for a game for the first time. I’m going to use the rest of our practices and scrimmages to keep improving as a player and prepare to play wherever coach (Tillman) needs me.”
Last August, Gibbons was one of 23 players selected to represent the United States on the U-19 team at the 2008 International Lacrosse Federation ILF World Championship. US Lacrosse invited 120 players to the tryouts before cutting down the final roster for a team that will play July 3-12, 2008, in Coquitlam, British Columbia. He was one of six attackmen chosen to the team.
“Trying out for the U-19 team was a real eye-opening experience,” Gibbons explained. “It was interesting meeting players from around the country and I’m looking forward to the international competition this summer.”
On Feb. 1, Harvard begins full practice, as the team visits Syracuse for a scrimmage Feb. 9. The Crimson also meets Bryan, Maryland and Binghamton in scrimmages before starting the season on the road at Siena Feb. 23. Harvard hosts Stony Brook in the team’s first contest at home March 1.
