Men’s Lacrosse Announces Captains for 2009
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Seniors Max Gottschall, Max Motschwiller, Sam Slaughter and Nick Smith have been selected captains by their teammates for the upcoming 2009 Harvard men’s lacrosse season, John Tillman, the Frisbie Family Head Coach for Men’s Lacrosse, announced Friday.
“Leadership is a key ingredient for any successful team,” Tillman said. “We are fortunate to have a senior class that exhibits the type of selflessness, character and work ethic that typifies that of the Harvard community. These four captains were elected by their peers and will represent our team very well. All four young men are very deserving of this honor. I have the utmost confidence in them.”
Gottschall, a defender, started all 14 games for Harvard last spring and grabbed 14 ground balls. He was a second-team All-Ivy League choice in 2008 and was both an All-Ivy honorable mention selection and a second-team NEILA All-New England pick as a sophomore. He has appeared in 37 games during his Crimson career and has a total of 38 ground balls. “Max is an excellent leader by example,” Tillman said. “He is very poised and calm under pressure.”
Motschwiller finished tied for second on last year’s team with 14 goals and was third with 21 points. The midfielder, who had four multiple goal games as a junior, now has 23 career goals and 39 points to his credit and has seen action in 35 contests. “Max is a terrific role model,” Tillman explained. “He is the very definition of what a student-athlete in the Ivy League should be.”
A second-team All-Ivy and second-team NEILA All-New England defender a year ago, Slaughter ranked second on the Crimson with 30 ground balls. He scored his lone goal of the season in a 8-5 win over Massachusetts March 8. He has appeared in all 39 games during his career and has grabbed 57 ground balls during his first three seasons. “Sam is the vocal and emotional leader of our team,” Tillman stated. “He is very motivated, focused and relentless.”
A faceoff specialist, Smith won 97 of 179 (.542) in 2008 and led Harvard with 59 ground balls, including a career-high seven in a 9-6 victory over Stony Brook March 1. Smith, who started all 14 games, also tallied two goals and added three assists to finish the year with five points. “He is the heart and soul of the team,” Tillman said. “Nick is a tireless worker and commands the respect of his peers.”
