Cassell nets 4 to lead Statesmen past Friars

PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Junior midfielder Tyler Cassell (Salisbury School/Geneva, NY) scored four consecutive goals to lead the Hobart lacrosse team to an 8-6 victory at Providence College this afternoon. The Statesmen improve to 3-0 for the first time since 2006, while the Friars fall to 0-2.

Hobart won all of the game's statistical battles, winning more faceoffs (10-8), picking up more ground balls (29-26), and taking more shots (31-19). The Statesmen were 2-of-3 on the extra-man, while Providence was 2-of-5.

Senior attackman Jeff Colburn (CNS/Liverpool, NY) also recorded four points for Hobart with two goals and two assists, while Colin Tigh paced the Friars with two goals and an assist. Statesmen sophomore long-stick midfielder Alex Caton (Bridgton Academy/Rochester, NY) collected a game-high five ground balls.

Junior midfielder Mike Suits (CBA/Syracuse, NY) and Colburn netted goals late in the first quarter to put Hobart in front 2-0 before Providence cracked the scoring column just four ticks before the end of the frame.

The Friars pulled even midway through the second quarter, but then Cassell took over. He gave Hobart the lead for good with a man-up goal at the 4:26 mark, set up by Colburn. Sixty-two seconds later, Cassell gave the Statesmen a 4-2 lead with a low bounce shot to close out the first half scoring.

Cassell opened the second half scoring with another extra-man tally, putting home another low bounce shot at the 6:55 mark, and 42 seconds after that put Hobart up 6-2 with a left-handed bouncer. The Friars netted one late in the quarter to make it a 6-3 game heading into the final 15 minutes.

Providence refused to go down without a fight, cutting its deficit to two three times in the final stanza, but could get no closer. Colburn and junior attackman Kevin Curtin (Corcoran/Syracuse, NY) netted the fourth quarter scores for the Statesmen.

Junior goalie Max Silberlicht (New Hartford/New Hartford, NY) made four saves to win for the eighth time in his past 10 starts, while Robert Ryan recorded 10 saves for the Friars.

Hobart is back in action on March 7, when the Statesmen host Bucknell. Faceoff on McCooey Field is scheduled for 1 p.m.
