Holy Cross Men's Lacrosse Falls To St. John's, 10-5, In Season-Opener |

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross men’s lacrosse team fell to St.
John’s, 10-5, in the season-opener for both teams on Saturday
afternoon at the Hart Turf Field in non-conference action. With the
loss, the Crusaders start the year 0-1 overall, while the Red Storm kick
off the season 1-0 overall.
Junior Edison Parzanese (Edgartown, Mass.) led Holy Cross with one goal
and one assist for two points, while junior Brian Becker (Syracuse,
N.Y.), junior Brendan Candon (Long Beach, N.Y.), sophomore Matt Moran
(West Henrietta, N.Y.) and freshman Colin McGeehin (Newtown Square, Pa.)
each scored a goal. Junior Kenny Minor (South Hadley, Mass.) had one
assist.
St. John’s was led by freshmen Carl Iacona and Matt Hurst as they both
recorded three points. Iacona scored three goals and Hurst had one goal
and two assists. Freshman Harry Kutner added two goals for the Red
Storm.
The Crusaders took an early 2-0 lead in the first period with goals by
Parzanese and Candon. Parzanese assisted on Candon’s goal. St. John’s
then scored four unanswered goals to move out to a 4-2 advantage. Kutner
made it a 2-1 game and then Iacona tied the game at 2-2 with 2:06 left
in the first period. Kutner then netted a man-up goal early in the
second period to give the Red Storm a 3-2 lead, while Iacona increased
the lead to 4-2 with 6:32 on the clock. Moran scored a goal with 1:31
left in the period as Holy Cross entered half time trailing by a score
of 4-3.
St. John’s dominated the third period as it scored all six goals of the
period to take a 10-3 lead into the fourth. With 9:50 on the clock in
the fourth period, Becker found the back of the net off a pass from
Minor, while McGeehin scored his first collegiate goal with 7:19
remaining in the period. Neither team scored again for the 10-5 final
score.
Senior goalie Jimmy Harrison (East Williston, N.Y.) made 20 saves, while
Gavin Buckley stopped 10 shots to earn the win. The Red Storm outshot
the Crusaders by a 40-19 margin, while St. John’s picked up 32 ground
balls and Holy Cross had 20. The Red Storm won 16 of the 18 face-offs
and went 2-3 on extra-man opportunities, while the Crusaders went 0-2.
The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, Feb. 21, when they host Yale
at noon.
