Pietramala Announces 2009 Men's Lacrosse Captains

BALTIMORE, MD -- Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse coach Dave Pietramala announced today that three players have been selected to serve as team captains for the upcoming 2009 season. Johns Hopkins advanced to the national championship game for the fourth time in six years last spring and will open the 2009 season at home against Siena on February 21.

Senior defenseman Michael Evans (Davidsonville, MD/South River), senior short-stick defensive midfielder Andrew Miller (Mastic, NY/William Floyd) and senior attackman Josh Peck (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) were selected in a vote by their teammates to serve as team captains for the 2009 season. This will be the first time any of the three has served as a team captain.

"Our staff is very excited to announce the selection of these young men as our team captains for the upcoming season," Pietramala noted. "We believe our players did an outstanding job of selecting individuals with strong character, a great work ethic, proven leadership skills and an attention to detail. They will play a pivotal role in the development of our team before and during the upcoming season. I am looking forward to working closely with them as we move forward."

Evans has played in all 48 games during his career and has started all 34 in the last two years. He earned Honorable Mention USILA America honors as a sophomore and third team honors as a junior. He was named to the NCAA All-Tournament team after leading the Blue Jays to the NCAA Championship game last season and has emerged as one of the top defensemen in the nation over the last two years. He routinely draws the assignment of marking the opposition's top attackman and helped the Blue Jays hold 12 opponents to nine goals or less last season.

Miller has also played in all 48 games during his career, including the last 46 as JHU's primary short-stick defensive midfielder. He totaled two goals and two assists last season to run his career totals to three goals and three assists. He also has 78 career ground balls and is regularly matched against many of the top midfielders the Blue Jays face.

Peck played in a career-high nine games last season and has played in 20 during his career. He scored one goal last season and has two goals in his career. He is in a battle for playing time on attack and could figure into the Blue Jays' extra-man plans as well.

Since Pietramala took over in 2001 the Blue Jays have posted an 96-25 record, qualified for the NCAA Tournament every year, advanced to the NCAA Semifinals five times (2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008), finished as national runner-up twice (2003, 2008) and won the 2005 and 2007 national championships.
