COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Terps got hat tricks from sophomores Grant Catalino and Ryan
Young, but it wasn't enough as the University of Maryland men's lacrosse team
dropped a 9-7 decision to No. 10 UMBC Saturday afternoon at Ludwig Field.
A slow first quarter saw the Retrievers take an early 1-0 lead, but Maryland tied
the game with 6:02 remaining in the first on Young's first goal of the game. Young
isolated his defender behind the cage and roll-dodged multiple times, finally
freeing himself for a quick shot from the left side.
UMBC scored the game's next four goals, with Alex Hopmann scoring twice and adding
an assist during the run, to take a 4-1 lead heading into halftime.
Neither team got on track early in the third until the Retrievers' Rich May scored
at the 8:55 mark.
It seemed like the Terps got the spark they were looking for on the ensuing face-off
when senior Jeff Reynolds popped the ball forward and scooped up the clean
groundball. He moved the ball to Catalino on the left wing, who quickly swung the
ball to Young on the goal line extended, where he beat UMBC goalie Jeremy Blevins
top side to make the score 5-2.
The game settled down again, but the Terps continued to claw their way back into the
game. A pushing foul on Retriever defender Matt Kresse gave Maryland its first
extra-man opportunity of the game with 4:50 to go in the third and it took the Terps
only 15 seconds to convert and cut the lead to two. Catalino finished the play with
a quick shot off of a nice swing pass from senior Jeremy Sieverts.
UMBC kept its poise and settled the game down once again and built its lead back to
four goals with a 3-0 scoring run to end the third and start the fourth quarters.
Catalino scored his second of the game on a low-to-low shot from the left wing at
the 8:27 mark, but UMBC's Kyle Wimer scored his second of the game to up the lead
back to five at the 7:50 mark.
Maryland made a bid for the big comeback, getting the final three goals of the game
on scores from Young, junior Will Yeatman and Catalino, but there wasn't enough time
for the Terps to finish the rally.
Despite the loss, Maryland's defense turned in a solid effort, led by sophomore
Brett Schmidt, who had three caused turnovers and a groundball. Sophomore Max
Schmidt had a pair of groundballs and a caused turnover and held UMBC's All-America
attackman Ryan Smith to just one assist on the day. Junior Brian Phipps had 11 saves
for the Terps in goal and tied his career-high with six groundballs.
The man-down unit was also solid for Maryland, holding the nation's top extra-man
unit (UMBC had converted 66.7% of its EMO chances coming into the game) to just one
goal in four opportunities.
There's little time for Maryland to recover as it returns to action tomorrow,
Sunday, March 15, for a 1p.m. game against Bryant at Ludwig Field.
