QUEENS, N.Y. (May 21, 2008) – St. John’s lacrosse senior attackman Tom Michaelsen was selected to play in the 67th annual United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association’s North/South Senior All-Star Game on Friday, May 23 at 4 p.m. at Harvard Stadium in Boston, Mass.
Michaelsen will play as part of the combined Division I-II North team coached by Quinnipiac head coach Eric Fekete and Ohio State head coach Joe Breschi, with players ranging from University of Denver to nearby Hofstra and Stony Brook.
“It’s great. He’s the sixth player from St. John’s to be selected to play in the game,” said St. John’s head coach Jason Miller. “It shows we’re doing the right things, and we are on our way to getting our program to where we want it to be.”
“It’s an honor to play with the some of the best players in the country and to be able to represent the school that I have given my all to for four years,” said Michaelsen.
The Bethpage, N.Y., native is the first St. John’s player to be selected to the senior all-star game since 1990. He joins five other prestigious alumni in Brian Bugge, Chris Johnston and Harold Dahlman who made 1990’s roster and Joe Gerraputa and Mike Bolger who were on the 1988 team. Currently, Johnston is the program’s leading career goal-scorer with 107 goals and Bolger is the current all-time leading scorer with 219 points.
Michaelsen’s selection to the team caps off his successful career with the Red Storm. This season he was named a National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) All-American, earned the Francis A. McCall Memorial Award as the team MVP and became the fifth player in St. John’s history to reach 100 career points.
In four seasons with St. John’s, Michaelsen has tallied 71 goals and 46 assists for 117 points, making him fourth in career assists, fifth on the all-time leading scorer list and tied for fifth in career goals in the program record books.
In 2007, Michaelsen was the first Red Storm player to earn all-league honors with an all-ECAC second team honor. As a sophomore in 2006 he earned the team’s offensive MVP award.
The contest will take place at Harvard Stadium as part of a lacrosse triple header, preceded by the Division III senior all-star game at 2 p.m. and followed by Major League Lacrosse’s Boston Cannons vs. the Rochester Rattlers at 7 p.m.
