Cambridge, Mass. (Feb. 9, 2009) – Stony Brook University’s men’s lacrosse team has been picked to finish third in the 2009 America East Conference race in the annual preseason poll of the league’s coaches it was announced today by the conference. Stony Brook totaled 16 points in the poll, just six behind Albany for second-place. Defending champion UMBC was the preseason pick to win the league.
Stony Brook, which finished third last season in the final America East standings, finished with a 7-7 overall record and rose to as high as No. 20 in the national polls. Beginning his third season with the Seawolves, head coach Rick Sowell returns six starters, including three All-America East players. He also welcomes a group of 18 newcomers to the program as Stony Brook looks to earn a spot in the America East Tournament for an eighth consecutive season. Preseason All-Americans, sophomore Jordan McBride (New Westminster, B.C.) and Kevin Crowley (New Westminster, B.C.) return to spearhead the offensive attack for SBU. As a freshman McBride led Stony Brook with 44 goals, including a school record 10 in the upset win over No. 7 Delaware, and finished third in the nation in goals per game. Crowley set up a lot of McBride’s goals, handing out 26 assists and finishing 10th in the nation in assists per game.
A first team all-conference defender, junior Steven Waldeck (Levittown, N.Y.) returns to anchor the Stony Brook defense after leading the team last season in ground balls and caused turnovers.
Stony Brook will once again be tested early, with its first game of the season coming on February 21 when the Seawolves will entertain perennial power Virginia, ranked No. 2 in the USILA coaches poll and No. 1 in the media poll, in LaValle Stadium at 1:00 p.m. That will kick off a string of three straight at home to start the season for Stony Brook, with Harvard (Feb. 28) and Lehigh (Mar. 3) following the Virginia game.
