Stony Brook's Sowell Named Assistant Coach for U.S. National Team

Stony Brook, N.Y. (Oct. 17, 2008) – US Lacrosse announced today that Stony Brook University men’s lacrosse head coach, Rick Sowell, has been named as an assistant coach for the U.S. men’s lacrosse team that will compete in the 2010 Federation of International Lacrosse World Championship in Manchester, England.

Two others who were also named today that will join Sowell as assistant coaches were Army head coach, Joe Alberici, and the head coach of the Philadelphia Barrage of Major League Lacrosse, Tony Resch. The three will work with head US coach Mike Pressler, the head coach at Bryant University, who was selected in September.

Sowell is in his third year as the head coach at Stony Brook where he has led the Seawolves to a 15-12 overall record and a berth in the America East Tournament in each of his two seasons. Under his guidance in 2008, Stony Brook had a record six players selected to All-America East teams, including the Freshman of the Year, Jordan McBride (New Westminster, British Columbia). Last season Sowell also led Stony Brook to a 19-16 upset of then seventh-ranked Delaware, the highest ranked team Stony Brook has ever defeated.
