Syracuse Defeats Harvard, 10-7, In Final Preseason Scrimmage

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange men’s lacrosse team defeated Harvard, 10-7, in its final preseason scrimmage on Saturday, Feb. 7 at the Carrier Dome. The two teams also played a 15-minute fifth quarter of running time that was won by Harvard, 1-0.

Sophomore attackman Stephen Keogh (Toronto, Ontario) paced the Orange offense with four points in the contest, including three goals. Three of his points came in the second quarter as Syracuse outscored the Crimson, 5-1, to take control of the game.

The Orange held a 2-1 advantage after a tightly contested first period when Keogh spurred a 4-0 Orange run with two goals and an assist to help Syracuse to a 6-1 advantage midway through the quarter. Keogh tallied the first two goals in the scoring spurt. Senior Dan Hardy (Tully, N.Y.) followed with an unassisted score at the 8:38 mark and Keogh capped the run by dishing to sophomore Josh Amidon (Lafayette, N.Y.) for a goal with 7:48 remaining in the half. A goal by Harvard’s Terry White stopped the run and cut the SU lead to four, 6-2, with 3:40 left in the half, but senior Greg Niewieroski (Watertown, N.Y.) pushed the hosts’ margin back to five, 7-2, at the intermission, scoring an unassisted goal with 24 second left in the half.

Syracuse scored the only two goals of the third quarter to take its largest lead of the day, 9-2, entering the fourth period, but the Crimson notched five goals in the final period, including four in a row to end the game and produce the final score.

Sophomore goalie John Galloway (Syracuse, N.Y.) made eight saves in 41:55 of action. Junior Al Cavalieri (Lathrup Village, Mich.) played the remainder of the game and finished with one stop.

Francis Ellis paced the Crimson with three points (2g, 1a). Harvard goalie Joe Pike surrendered eight goals and finished with nine saves.

The Orange opens the 2009 regular season at the Carrier Dome on Sunday, Feb. 15 with a 3 p.m. contest against Providence. The game will be the first meeting between the two schools in men’s lacrosse.

Game Notes: Redshirt freshman Tim Desko (Syracuse, N.Y.) started on attack in place of senior Kenny Nims (Watertown, N.Y.), who missed the scrimmage due to illness … Senior captain Pat Perritt (Holtsville, N.Y.) saw his first action of year, taking the field in the final stages of the first quarter after recovering from an off-season injury.
