FOXBORO, Mass. – Syracuse attackman Mike Leveille (Delmar, N.Y.) was named to the ESPN The Magazine Men’s Academic All-District I At-Large Team on May 22. It is the third straight season Leveille has earned academic all-district plaudits. He was a second-team choice in 2006 and 2007.
By virtue of his placement on the district’s first team, Leveille’s name will be forwarded to the national Academic All-America ballot to be voted upon by the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The honor is the latest for Leveille who has already been recognized several times this season. In April, he was the male recipient of SU’s Soladay Award, the highest honor presented by the Department of Athletics to a current student-athlete for athletic and academic achievement. He was also named SU’s Male Athlete of the Year for 2008 and he is a finalist for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award for men’s lacrosse.
Leveille, who received his degree in accounting two weeks ago, is the Orange’s leading scorer this season. He has 43 goals and 30 assists on the year. Leveille has at least one point in each of his last 55 games and he ranks 12th at SU in career goals (126), 13th in career assists (79) and he is tied for 13th on the school’s all-time scoring chart (205 points). He has multiple points in every game this year and tallied a goal and two assists to help lead the Orange past Notre Dame in last week's NCAA Quarterfinals.
Leveille has been a member of the SU Athletic Director’s Honor Roll (min. 3.0 GPA) every semester and has also volunteered his time to several community service activities, including the Syracuse Meals on Wheels program. He will begin a full-time job with KPMG in Manhattan this fall.
To be eligible for the Academic All-America program, student-athletes must achieve sophomore standing at their current school and possess a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.2. Participants in fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling are eligible for the men’s at-large program.
Leveille and rest of the Orange will take on Virginia in the NCAA semifinals on Saturday, May 24 at 12 p.m. at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass. The game will be televised live on ESPN2.
