FOXBORO, Mass. – Senior Steven Brooks (Libertyville, Ill.) was named the Midfielder of the Year by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) on Saturday, May 24. He is the sixth Syracuse student-athlete to claim the Lt. Donald C. MacLaughlin, Jr. Award and the first since Casey Powell in 1996.
Brooks lists third on the Orange with 38 points and 27 assists. He owns a team-high five game-winning goals. Brooks was tabbed the Offensive Player of the Week by CSTV.com on March 17 after scoring the decisive tally in a 14-13 overtime victory against Johns Hopkins.
Brooks, named a mid-season first-team All-American by Inside Lacrosse, has developed a penchant for dramatic goals during the 2008 season. In addition to his golden goal against the Blue Jays, the Libertyville, Ill., native twice forced overtime in the final 30 seconds against Virginia on March 1 and Georgetown on March 9. Brooks found the back of the cage with 28 ticks remaining in regulation against the Cavaliers before beating the clock by two seconds versus the Hoyas.
Brooks joins Todd Curry (1987), Gary Gait (1988-89), Dom Fin (1994), Roy Colsey (1995) and Powell as SU players that have been selected as the nation's top midfielder.
