2008 Vermont Men's Lacrosse Year in Review

  2008 MEN'S LACROSSE SEASON NOTEBOOK
The University of Vermont men's lacrosse team finished the season 5-11 overall and 1-4 in America East. The Catamounts faced three teams ranked in the top-5 this year including No. 2 Duke, No. 3 Virginia and No. 5 UMBC.

LICHTFUSS NAMED TEAM MVP
Freshman Derek Lichtfuss (Lutherville, Md.) had a team-high 21 goals and a team leading 29 points on his way to being named team MVP. He was also named to the America East All-Rookie Team. Lichtfuss ranked ninth among America East players in goals scored. He was named the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Division I Player of the Week on April 7 after scoring seven goals and nine points in a pair of games for the Catamounts that week. He ended the year with a nine-game scoring streak. He ranked first on the team in shots with 88 and his four man-up goals ranked second best on the team.

AARON SHORE NAMED STRENGTH & CONDITIONING ALL-AMERICAN
Senior defenseman Aaron Shore (Ithaca, N.Y.) was named a Strength and Conditioning All-American in 2008. The NSCA All-American Strength and Conditioning Athletes of the Year program recognizes those student-athletes, whose accomplishments, in the opinion of their strength coach, reflect their dedication to strength training and conditioning. This year, the NSCA awarded 239 collegiate athletes from 165 schools with this esteemed award. A co-captain this past season, Shore played in 60 games in his career. He started in every game this season and missed just three games throughout his career. He ranked tied for fourth on the team in ground balls with 31 and finished his career with 99 ground balls.

COLLIN SHORE WINS SUNDERLAND TROPHY
Senior defenseman Collin Shore (Ithaca, N.Y.) was named the 2008 male recipient of the Russell O. Sunderland Memorial Trophy at the Rally Awards on May 6 at the Flynn Theatre in Burlington. The award honors the senior male and female UVM student-athletes who, throughout their college careers, demonstrated a high level of athletic achievement and who exemplified the qualities of character, leadership and persistence in overcoming obstacles. A battle with cancer did not keep Shore off the men's lacrosse field this season. Shore was diagnosed with cancer in the fall but still played in every game this spring, making 11 starts. He received radiation treatment throughout the year but continued to participate in every practice and served as an inspiration to his teammates. Off the field Shore was a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council and represented Vermont at the America East SAAC meeting in Boston in the fall. On the field Shore was one of Vermont's top defenseman throughout his career and played in 37 games and totaled 67 ground balls.

LICHTFUSS, LUBAS AND WATSON EARN CONFERENCE AWARDS
Three Vermont men's lacrosse student-athletes earned America East all-conference honors in 2008. Freshman Derek Lichtfuss was named to the America East All-Rookie Team, senior Justin Lubas (Freehold, N.J.) was named to the conference all-academic team and junior Michael Watson (Albany, N.Y.) was named second team all-conference. Lichtfuss led the Catamounts in scoring with 21 goals and 29 points. His eight assists and four man-up goals both ranked second best on the team. Lichtfuss ranked ninth in goals among America East players. Lubas started every game in goal for Vermont and posted an America East leading 182 saves.
