Yale 13, Holy Cross 8

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Michael Karwoski, who had three goals and an assist, was one of eight Yale players to hit the net as the men’s lacrosse team opened its 2009 season by racing past Holy Cross 13-8.

Junior Brendan Gibson clinched the game with two late goals, and he added three assists. Sophomore Brian Douglass and rookie Matt Miller each chipped in a pair of goals.

Sophomore Jonathan Falcone, making his first career start, earned the win in the Yale net with 16 saves, including eight in the third period.

“We’ve been thinking about this game for a long time. That one [last year’s 7-6 loss to Holy Cross] really shocked us and we wanted revenge,” said Yale head coach Andy Shay.”

Karwoski, a senior, tallied once in the first to put the visitors up 3-1 and then tallied consecutive goals in the third to put the game out of reach at 9-3. Yale’s offensive explosion came against Holy Cross goalie Jimmy Harrison (15 saves), who stopped 22 of 28 shots to upset the Blue a year ago at New Haven.

Junior Jerome Arnold notched Yale’s first goal of 2009 to open the game’s scoring at 13:44. His teammates added five of the game’s next six goals and the Crusaders (0-2) never got closer than two down.

Senior Kevin Disceplo had a strong showing in the circle by winning 15 of 23 draws and grabbing eight ground balls. His efforts took some of the pressure off captain Matt Aronson and the Yale defense that held the Crusaders to 29 shots.

“It was great to see our guys fight through adversity today. I told them they [Holy Cross] would make a run,” said Shay, referring to the home team’s three consecutive goals to close the gap at 10-8 in the fourth. [Brendan] Gibson came up huge for us.”

The next test for the Bulldogs is a tougher with a Feb. 28 road game against No. 20 UMass.
